Data gathering and analysis are an important part of the scientific method because data are critical for testing hypotheses. One example of data gathered by forensic anthropologists is the measuring of skeletal elements to help build the osteobiography of a person (age, sex, stature, etc). The graph below shows how such data can be analyzed, to further provide useful information for forensic anthropologists and law enforcement. Each diamond is a data point that represents an individual whose femur length and height is known, and these data points were used to generate the equation and the R2 value. We didn't cover this in class and you are not responsible for knowing the math, but the equation in the top right describes the slope of the black line. The R2 value describes how well the two variables are correlated with each other, and I will tell you that .802 is a very strong correlation. This tells us that femur (thigh bone) length is correlated with the height of a person, so much so that if we only have a single individual femur, that can be used to PREDICT the height of the person it belonged to.
