PROBLEM TWO Iris Wong is a facilitator in a provincial accounting education program (PAEP). Her responsibilities include marking weekly assignments, providing weekly feedback to students, leading inperson weekend workshops, and monitoring an online discussion board. Iris used to do this as a sidejob while working as a staff accountant at an accounting firm. As she took on more and more work, it got to the point where she was earning more from facilitating than from her fulltimejob, so she resigned from her accounting position to focus on facilitating full time. Iris enters into separate contracts with PAEP for each project she takes on. The program has four semesters a year with content broken up into various online modules (e.g., assurance, tax, finance, etc.). Each module has one weekend inperson session every semester. For online work, module materials are provided to Iris including marking guides, training documents, and solutions to all course work. The modules run online through PAEP's learning management system. While there is typically a 96hour deadline to mark and return weekly feedback to candidates, Iris is free to set her own work schedule. Most of the work is done in her home office using her own computer and she is responsible for the associated costs involved. Projects have flat fees and Iris is not entitled to vacation pay or other benefits. During the inperson weekend sessions, PAEP rents conference space at local hotels or conference centres and provides Iris with a projector, WIFI access, chart paper, and markers. Sessions run in different locations all over the province simultaneously, so PAEP strictly controls the content and materials that Iris covers in class in order to ensure uniformity in all the sessions across the province.
