Refer to irish mental health act !!! 1200 words in total! Amelia is 16 and is experiencing depression. Her parents noticed a gradual change in her demeanour since the early stages of the COVID pandemic and sought mental health support for her when her mood did not seem to lift and she began withdrawing from activities that she had previously enjoyed. They contacted their GP in late 2020 who referred her to the community mental health services and also advised to contact Jigsaw. She attended online counselling with a Jigsaw counsellor for a series of 8 sessions, which she found helpful, but their short term service was not able to resolve her difficulties. Her parents are unable to afford private care and were proactive in contacting the community mental health service on a regular basis, to remind them of her ongoing need for mental health care. However, each time they made contact they were told that unfortunately, their waiting list was long, and they would get in touch when it was her turn. Amelia began to refuse school a few months ago, isolated herself in her bedroom nearly constantly, and her personal hygiene also suffered. After she expressed suicidal ideation to her parents an emergency referral to CAMHS was made by her GP and she was seen by a psychiatrist in CAMHS who assessed her and prescribed antidepressant medication. However, Amelia said she did not want to take medication and would prefer to talk to someone about her difficulties. The psychiatrist said that he would be happy to check in with her every few months, but that unfortunately they could not offer her psychotherapy within the service at the moment. When her mother got the medication from the pharmacy, Amelia refused to take the medication. She says she does not want to take medication, that she does not think it will help her. She says she has read that anti-depressant medication can have serious side effects for adolescents and is worried about what the medication will do to her brain and body. She thinks it would help her to talk to a therapist instead. Her parents had been hoping that Amelia might have advanced sufficiently on the waiting list to be seen by the community psychology service soon but just received a letter stating that the service had discharged her because she was now in the care of CAMHS. Her family is now trying to convince her to take the medication, but she keeps refusing, and they are at a loss what to do to keep her safe and help her get well. Law Question: What effect does the Mental Health Act have in this case and how does the law support, or not, Amelia’s right to refuse medication in this instance? (800 words) Ethics Question: In your opinion, what are the most important ethical aspects of the situation? Explain relevant concepts and provide an outline of measures that could help address these ethical considerations.(400 words)
