STATUTORY DEFINITIONS Property crimes involve the "illegal taking or damaging of property, including cash and personal belongings" (FBI, 2017) from individuals, motor vehicles, residences, and businesses. Burglary, robbery, and larceny-theft are examples of property crimes. Fraud, vandalism, and arson are also considered property crimes. It is worth noting that the FBI and a number of other agencies that gather crime statistics do not consider robbery a form of theft, but rather regard it as a personal crime since it generally involves a direct confrontation between the robber and his or her victim. Consequently, robbery statistics are not included in the property crime statistics discussed in this chapter. We include it here, however, since the primary goal of robbery and of robbers is not personal harm, but rather money, property, or valuables.
