Alvaro Siza's Watchtower, Portugal Design Studio Session 2-COMPRESSION ELEMENT DESIGN ASSESSMENT CRITERIA You need to be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of: how to undertake simple structural modelling a real situation; how to combine the loadings with safety factors to generated the worst conditions; how to calculate design stresses and forces from factored loadings; how to undertake design the structural elements in steelwork. INFORMATION You have been supplied with photographs of Alvaro Siza's watchtower in Portugal. You will need to inspect the photos and drawings, to generate information on geometry, materials, and section sizes. Not all information are given to you. Assume any other missing data required. You are the engineer - make appropriate judgements & sound engineering assumptions. Consider steel grating as flooring at all levels. Floor loads shall be taken as 1.0 kN/m' at all levels. Take self-weight of steel staircase as 2.5 kN/m. CALCULATIONS TO INCLUDE: 1.0 Carry out a load assessment on the watchtower structure. Propose and sketch the load path on the structure considering all actions. Calculate the worst compression loads acting to the ground floor columns. Neglect any lateral load effects. 2.0 3.0 Design appropriate section for the ground floor columns (refer to page 4) based on the worst compression loads, considering all possible failure modes. 4.0 Assume a lateral design force of 15 kN applied to each floor, design suitable diagonal bracing elements for the watchtower structure, considering both tension and compression effects. Ensure all calculations are laid out in accordance with standard design office practice and they are completed to a professional standard.
