Some of the key ethical standards when using behavioral modification and/or in doing research of psychological study is that you cannot deprive clients of their rights, nor can you harm them in any fashion. There are a number of questions that should be answered fully for each therapy case. Goals should of treatment should be adequately considered in that they must be written, the client needs to understand the goals, the goals need to be agreed upon and they need to serve the client's interest. The client should have a choice of treatment. The client's participation should be voluntary. The adequacy of the treatment needs to be evaluated. Confidentiality needs to be protected and the therapist needs to be qualified. In the Stanford experiment, it was unethical "due to a lack of fully informed consent, abuse of participants, and lack of appropriate debriefings...the experimenters may have encouraged abusive behaviors." (Cherry, 2023) They are not allowed in the field as this type of behavior towards others can cause severe and long-lasting damage to a person in many ways. In the Stanford experiment, the prisoners were not allowed to leave and were coerced into staying. The psychological abuse they received from the guards caused "distorted" thinking. There were many "blurred" boundaries in the "role-playing". The guards were degrading and demeaning to the prisoners and the psychologist who performed the study allowed the students to suffer in all ways. The harm that can be done from not following ethical standards can range from psychological, verbal, physical, emotional, and mental abuse. This can cause long term effects to the person who was either behaving unethically and/or receiving unethical treatment. Works Cited Cherry, K. M. (2023). The Stanford Prison Experiment.
