STUDENT 1:
I noticed the instructor used the usual highlighting to notate the reasons/evidence, while continuing reading the article until he found the other part of the reason/evidence. This article is a traditional piece of writing that I have seen in the past. The instructor would continue reading, instead of actively looking for the evidence to follow the reason chosen. Once the instructor was able to find the reason or evidence that matched, he would jot it down on the organizer. This was a learning curve for me because I have never actively looked into this type of writing before. I think the highlighting, continued reading, and going back once the evidence or reason is found was very helpful. It demanded my brain to think of how to locate important parts of this writing, and challenge me to read more focused. Being able to see it by an example made a clear visual of how this type of writing has its challenges, however I can still use these tactics to benefit me as I plan for the summary response paper.
STUDENT 2:
There were a few differences that I saw due to the publications structure, namely he made sure to start with questions he had on the topic, and noted main points/differing opinions as they came up.
In articles previously analyzed, I found the main points and differing opinions offered flowed in an order consistent with the way the GO is structured. This made it very easy to fill it out. When comparing that with the instructors, he fills in the information as it is given, keeping in mind the overall topic. In addition, He made sure any questions he had on the topic were addressed as he read through the article.
The most helpful tool was the Graphic Organizer. It helped extract useful information from the source, even if it's not given in a uniform manner. Utilizing the Critical Reading strategy aided in this as well.
STUDENT 3:
I believe that the depth of monitoring and collecting information depends on the company and type of job. Some jobs require a higher security clearance such as dealing with financial documents and certain positions such as top level management requires the employee to have a professional demeanor. Normally, companies monitor surface level, public posts and will say something if you are speaking poorly about the company you work for. I think it is ethical to collect publicly posted information that anyone can see. I think it is unethical to search more in depth and invade employees' privacy. I do believe that employees should be informed about data collection and monitoring on company devices and the internet. The information would be available in the employee hand book and a copy given to the employee at the time of hire. The controls I expect to be in place are: monitoring company emails, accessed websites, etc. on the company server. The controls on websites would have certain things blocked. If someone is using the company emails, data, etc. in a wrongful way, then an investigation on the employees data and email content, website history, etc. would be investigated in depth.
STUDENT 4:
There are both unethical and illegal implications of an organization monitoring and collecting information about their employees if it is conducted without the knowledge or consent of the employees. While there is no standard expectation of privacy for work, it is important to be transparent and provide information on how the information is collected and for what purpose. The kind of information that is ethical are productivity, web/device usage, employee background, and behavior as the information collected is related to both work, the company goals or skills. The kind of information that is unethical to collect is data usage outside work hours, on personal devices, personal information not related to work, and hidden cameras as it is not pertinent to work, the company or its goals. An example is an employee's dating life, where it is not relevant in a software company aspect, but up until 2015, it was relevant to Qatar Airways where cabin crew could be terminated if they became pregnant or got married within the first five years of employment. While their policies were not 'illegal', it was unethical. Despite it being widely known that there should be no expectation of privacy in the workplace, I still think managers and organizations should inform employees that the information is being collected as a good faith effort and a reminder, and how the collected information is utilized. The types of control expected to be in place for the collection of information are collected information being protected, relevant information only, and verified consent of collection of data prior to hiring.
