Initiating a strategic planning process to improve the ED information system of the hospital would require the development in phases. One of the first things that needs to be reviewed is identifying where improvements need to be made. Obvious needs for change are how records are kept and the technology being used. There needs to be a proper evaluation of the IT infrastructure and an assessment of the ED information system to rule out problem areas in it. Error reports can be reviewed and data can be evaluated to change the strategies to help improve the performance overall for the staff. The goals for the ED information system should be outlined where they are aligned with the purposes of the hospital like the services provided to the patient, operational efficiency, and a focus on quality patient care that in turn provides patient satisfaction. Clear IT strategy and IT staff development should be completed. Proper training should be provided to ensure proper skills are learned to support new applications and user assistance. The hospital staff, physicians, IT, and Risk Management should all be involved in the discussions regarding changes made to the structure and system so that everyone can understand what is to be expected. Here is where IT policies and changes can be made with everyone's input. Evaluation of proper security can be done, improvement of data integrity, changing manual records to electronic records should be done, and adjustments to communication tools. Once implementation of new structure and strategies is completed, the evaluation of the change should be completed to see what has proven to be effective and what, if any, new changes need to be altered.
