- Option 1:This week we learned about several different theories of motivation including, McClelland's theory of motivation, drive reduction theory, arousal approaches, incentive approaches, and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Describe a recent accomplishment in your life and explain it in terms of at least two theories of motivation discussed in the text. Compare and contrast the theories of motivation you chose to explain your example.
Having learned about incentive theory this week, I have identified this theory as a recent motivation on a project at work. Traditionally my work in the medical field provides a different type of satisfaction than those who work in an office. I have never worked in an office space; I have exclusively worked in clinic during my professional career. Recently I took a job in a compliance office and my reward system has totally changed. In the field or in clinic I think I was motivated by the simple fact of "means to an end". The McClelland theory of Hierarchy. I need shelter for my kids and food on the table. I did the bare minimum to just satisfy the workday. Fast forward to this new position in an office with a direct supervisor. I am finding satisfaction in ways I never had before. For instance, deadlines and finishing projects give me a certain immediate satisfaction. Completing tasks and goals and getting positive feedback from my boss has proved to be a motivator for achievement. This is clear incentive theory, the positive feedback is a new motivator that gives me motivation to reach for higher goals here in the office. Recently I took on a project that will change some of our practices here on the Fire Department. It was a interesting exercise to understand the different motivators from Working on an ambulance with no real supervisor interaction, no empirical reward or feedback of any kind, it is said a very thankless job. To working in an office with real time feedback and stimulus when doing something right.
