While looking after this 75-year-old patient with dementia who has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression it is important to be able to take care of their needs appropriately. This can be done by following Maslow's hierarchy of needs. First, her psychological needs must be seen too. This includes her basic needs. For instance, food, shelter, water, and things of that next nature. With her mental health, the second most important is her safety needs. Being depressed and having dementia you should pay close attention to their mental health. Dementia alone can be dangerous. Depression and anxiety can cause safety to be even more of a concern. There is also love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization(Feldman, 2019). I would show this patient that I was there to help her and be a friend, show her respect as a person, and help her to be the best version of herself and live life to the fullest despite her setbacks.

Person-centered therapy would be important for this patient. Being empathetic towards their thoughts and feelings in their current condition and state of mind. Also, try to redirect them toward positive things in their life rather than the negative. Person-centered therapy was introduced by Carl Rogers and he emphasized being able to be nonjudgmental, empathetic and a good listener is a good method to use(Person-centered therapy (Rogerian therapy) - statpearls - NCBI bookshelf n.d.).

As a nurse, it is important to understand the vast differences in people in how they think, their beliefs, and how they respond to things. You also should be empathetic to their needs and be able to know the warning signs when an individual may need help.
