"Tone is important in business writing because it shows the receiver of the message how you feel about them or their business. If you were happy you couldn't help me or sad you have to help me I would not want to do further business in my opinion. One major point I took away from the OWL paper is the noticeable word choice differences between 'emphasizing' and/or 'subordinating' information to your reader. Emphasis words would be 'most important' or 'primary'. Subordinate examples would be 'a minor point to consider' or 'least important'. Another thing I learned from the OWL paper is while using a technique like bolding, underlining, or highlighting information, you don't want to over use those techniques otherwise it will lose its emphasis or desired effect overall.
A situation from my work life in which the written tone of a message could've changed the outcome of my work situation would be. When my manager sent me and email following up about a certain situation involving another co-worker. The language used in the email was very laid back and buddy buddy. This made me think the email was just between the front end leaders and myself, not knowing the other department managers we're also included in the thread. This incident made it hard for me to receive back up and support from the other leader's teams while they were working with me due to misinterpreted banter and conversation being had and taken out of context of an email. "

An significant topic will be communicated most successfully in a brief, straightforward line. The phrases that follow can include further details, adequate examples, or supporting data. Insert a notion into a compound phrase to give it subordination.
