How would you explain the concept of identity to a 10-year-old?

To explain the concept of identity to 10 years old, I will start by stating that identity is all about who we are as individuals. It includes the things that make us unique and special, such as our personality, interests, and beliefs. I will ask the kid about their favorite color, hobby and sport they enjoy. I will then highlight that these things are part of their identity as well as their name, age, and where they are from. I will also talk about how our family, friends, culture, and experiences help shape our identity. Finally, I will make sure to highlight that it is important to remember that everyone has their own identity that makes them unique and should be respected. We need to embrace our own identity and accepting others for who they are helps generate a diverse and inclusive world.

How would you explain the concept of identity to a 10 year old?

"Identity refers to our sense of who we are as individuals and as members of social groups. It also refers to our sense of how other may perceive and label us." (Exploring the Concept of Identity, n.d.) Explaining the concept of identity to a 10-year old, I would put it in a way that a 10-year old can understand. I would say that identity is like the special things that make you who you are. It's like a puzzle with many pieces, and each piece is a part of you. These pieces can include your name, your family, your friends, the things you like and don't like, and the things that you're good at. I would say to imagine you have a favorite color, like purple, and you really enjoy playing soccer. Those are parts of your identity. Your identity also includes where you come from like your city, state or country, and the language that you speak. It's all the things that make you unique and different from everyone else. Your identity can grow and change as you learn new things and have different experiences. Sometimes, it's like discovering new puzzle pieces that add to who you are. And it's perfectly okay for people to have different identities because we're all special in our own ways. So, identity is like a big, colorful puzzle that represents you and all the things that make you, you.
