Path-Goal Theory
Applying Styles
The Path-Goal theory defines how leaders can motivate their teams. According to our textbook, there are four leadership approaches: directive, supportive, participative, and achievement-oriented (Northouse, 2022). The directive approach is structured and best used for complex tasks. In contrast, the supportive system provides compassion and empathy during mundane tasks. The participative process includes leadership involvement in unstructured tasks. Finally, the achievement-oriented approach offers challenges and rewards and is used to challenge teams to perform at a higher level.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The first strength of the theory is that it provides a method for leaders to determine different motivation methods according to the group's tasks and their team members' expectations. It gives leaders a dynamic approach to motivating their followers. The next strength is that it is unique in forcing leaders to focus on the needs of individuals in the group. The final power of the theory is it is natural. I applied this theory to my leadership style and didn't even realize I was doing it.
The first weakness of the theory is that it relies heavily on the leader to motivate and guide the group. The second weakness is that it needs to considerhow the group will perceive the leader. The gender and the race of the leader can influence how the actions are received. The final weakness of the theory is that it leaves many questions for a leader to consider while trying to motivate their team.
Circumstances to use the Path-Goal Theory This theory is applicable at any level of leadership. To apply the view, leaders must evaluate the needed tasks and the team assigned to the job. Leaders can use the Path-Goal approach to determine which method is best suited for the group and apply it accordingly.
