Please respond to statement from peer. What is your opinion?
My three personal values are compassion, honesty, and perseverance. Compassion is showing empathy towards others and doing your best to understand their struggles. Compassion is a core value to me because some things in life are uncontrollable. For me, I can control how compassionate I am to others and I understand that it makes a whirl of a difference. Compassion gives the ability to connect with those on a deeper level, provide empathy and kindness, understanding society as a whole. Compassion will impact my work with individuals and families in a positive way by actions and words showing that I am there to help in the most positive way that I can. Honesty is another personal value, and this is important to me, even outside of being a social worker. Honesty is what will form trust and trust is needed in a therapeutic relationship. If trust is broken, it can be difficult to form relationships or resume the relationship that was once had. It can cause more effort to be needed to rebuild a relationship. Perseverance is what keeps me going. Throughout social work there will be setbacks. With any job, at that. Perseverance will show resilience, the importance of hard work, and determination. It strengthens me in times where I feel like I want to give up. It will push me to face a setback or adversity head on. I keep perseverance in my personal values to keep myself accountable when things get difficult. Transference can help a client's progress. Though it is not relied upon as the only way to explore personal values, it is a good tool that helps a client practice self-reflection and personal growth. For these reasons, it will be beneficial for a client. An example of what countertransference might look like when in a helping relationship with an individual or family may be working with a woman who has experienced childhood trauma. As a therapist, things may be going through her past to be working through some traumatic events. The countertransference may project an overprotective stance or the sense of needing to rescue the client from these things that have happened to her. The conversations may be genuine, it can be felt as enabling the client to be developing self-efficiency.
