Community policing has been the center focus point for law enforcement to better engage with the communities they serve. Community engagement allows law enforcement agencies and their officers to connect with the community and residents to discover and modify tactics to stop crime from plaguing communities. Methods of policing such as problem-solving, intelligence-led policing, and statistical crime analysis are tools to address the crimes and disorders best today (Peak et al., 2018). It's stated that 70% of local law enforcement agencies claim to focus on community policing and that statistics are closer to factual than not. While the remaining 30% may not claim it, it's more likely to believe that local law enforcement across the nation is engaging with the community in some way, some more than others. Because of the stigma surrounding law enforcement over the past decade, the negative attention has pushed agencies to ensure their communities are there to protect and serve their best interest. Sorrentino et al. (2023) further expand on the notion that in this era of policing, law enforcement is focused on pleasing the community by stopping and deterring crime.
Some of the significant hurdles Peak et al. (2018) discuss ultimately have to do with the administration down to the officers. As stated, community engagement begins with the chief of police or the sheriff implementing some form of community engagement to better connect with the citizens. Also, leadership plays a significant role in community engagement. The first-line supervisors are another critical aspect of community engagement. Peak et al. (2018) and Carter et al. (2019) discussed the vital importance of first-line supervisors on their officers. Because patrol officers are the backbone of a department, they will interact more with the public than any other individual within that agency. The first-line supervisor must push for community engagement by patrolling certain areas regularly, vocalizing what the command staff wants out of petrol, and ensuring officers' morale does not hinder community engagement. The hurdles discussed in the text (Peak et al., 2018) have to deal with administrators and leaders needing to allocate more attention and resources to community engagement. It is said that after 9/11, community relations were replaced with antiterrorism operations. However, because of the policing models that have been adopted, community engagement is still very much prevalent in today's policing styles.
