Young CPAs recommend their 5 top podcasts

Its never been so easy to be educated and inspired, given todays abundance of digital information. Young CPAs can watch TED talks or other videos, converse with colleagues online, and read enlightening articles on numerous websites. Many also find valuable information in podcasts, digital audio files that they can listen to in the car, at the gym, at home, or almost anywhere.

I listen to podcasts because they are useful, easy to integrate into daily life, and offer insight and perspective into this ever-changing world, said Beth Wixom, accounting and assurance senior at BeachFleischman PC in Phoenix, who recently passed the CPA exam. This is a busy time in our lives, and I for one am open to all the help and guidance I can get.

Wixom and several of her peers offer the following recommendations for podcasts that provide insight, ideas, and advice for young CPAs:

Accounting Best Practices . Steve Bragg, CPA, a former executive and author of numerous accounting books including the GAAP Guidebook and The CFO Guidebook, hosts this series of podcasts, which cover everything from fraud and cash forecasting to internal audits, technology, and the CFO career path. Ive found the accounting technology topic to be helpful in my line of work, as this is something learned on the job, said Michael Camden, CPA, manager, credits and incentives at Ryan LLC in Austin, Texas. Listeners can benefit from the podcast as it offers better ideas of how clients work and think and includes some real-life examples and solutions to problems.

The Bean Counter . Hosted by Andrew Argue, CPA, a former assurance senior associate with PwC, this series of talks provides career advice for future and young CPAs. The podcast episodes feature interviews with recruiters and successful CPAs. Topics covered include job offers, nontraditional accounting jobs, and getting promoted. Argue addresses some important, yet sometimes difficult subjects, such as workplace conflicts, workplace romances, how to get noticed, and politics in the workplace, Wixom said. The best part is that it is spoken from the perspective of someone who understands what we go through as young professionals in public accounting.

Masters in Business . In this hourlong recurring podcast, Bloomberg View columnist Barry Ritholtz interviews people about investing, finance, business, and other topics. Interviewees have included Jack Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group; Kelly Coffey, CEO of J.P. Morgan U.S. private bank; and actor, author, and director Harry Shearer. These discussions help a business-minded Millennial learn more about the finance and investing worlds out there today, said Chris Ekimoff, CPA/CFF, who is a director at Resolution Economics LLC in Washington.

Ricky Gervais on Not Having a Real Job . Ricky Gervais, creator of the hit British television series The Office, talks about success and taking pride in your work in this one-time podcast produced by the Harvard Business Review. He also stresses the importance of asking yourself, Why? as you progress in your careerin other words, why you do things in a certain fashion or why you are taking a certain career route. The podcast can help you stay on the right path and avoid making any wrong moves career-wise, said Diego J. Baca, CPA, assurance manager at EY in Denver. The message that Gervais conveys is a great reminder of how careers can both fatten your wallet and feed your soul.

Grammar Girl: Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing . Mignon Fogarty, founder of Quick and Dirty Tips, hosts this series of podcasts, which offer tips to improve writing skills and use of the English language. Tips cover grammar, style, new words, pronunciations, and punctuation, to name a few. All professionals should listen to this podcast, said Elizabeth Pittelkow, CPA/CITP, CGMA, director of accounting and compliance at ArrowStream Inc. in Chicago. It is interesting, informational, and will help you become a more polished communicator.
