Survey research is a quantitative report in which variables are measured using self-report and there is an emphasis on sampling with a preference of mainly large random sampling, being one of the only report methods that uses random sampling routinely.
My research idea is about whether or not gender and age have an influence on the Stroop effect. It is hypothesized that there will be a significant difference between men and women and that this difference is also influenced by age. For this research question a survey questionnaire would be useful in the beginning stages of testing to categorize the demographics of individuals, while often demographic questions are presented last to participants it would be useful for respondents to answer this questionnaire beforehand, which would include questions regarding age and sex. Formatting the questions would be simple enough in the form of close-ended yes or no questions. The questionnaire can be sent through email to participants or presented in person at the beginning of the experiment. We should focus on gathering a large sample size as we are attempting to make a generalization about differing genders. Stratified random sampling would prove useful to divide the population into different strata and then a random sample from each to ensure that there is equal representation amongst genders that matches the proportion in the population. By using stratified random sampling we can avoid sampling bias by assuring that the sample selected is representative of the population. To make up for any confounding variables we can also add questions to the questionnaire regarding other factors that may affect the outcome of the Stroop effect.
