John Doe is a computer hacker located in Tampa, Florida. Two years ago, Doe began a social engineering scheme to steal information from his employer, which is called SafeZone. SafeZone has a Tampa office but is headquartered in Georgia. SafeZone eventually fired Doe and gave him 24 hours to remove his belongings from the office. After his termination, but before leaving the office, Doe accessed his manager's desktop computer and downloaded a file containing the HR records of Doe's department. He was not detected that day, but months later, Doe's former coworkers started receiving credit alerts indicating they'd applied for credit cards that were being used to purchase lavish vacations.

Doe's later coworkers contacted SafeZone and advised they were the victims of identity theft, all starting around the same date. SafeZone launched an internal investigation and hired an outside law firm, which in turn hired a forensic computer analyst to do a forensic review of Doe's computer. The company also reviewed surveillance footage of Doe's last day and saw he entered his manager's office for 1 hour before turning in his access card and company property. Through this investigation, SafeZone determined that Doe stole the HR file. They turned this information over to the FBI, which launched an investigation. Through its investigation, the FBI determined that Doe stole the HR records of 125 employees, and successfully obtained credit cards in 3 victims' names, totaling at least $180,000 in intended losses.
