For this paper, you will be practicing the skills of perception-checking and the ODIS method. Over the next week, use perception-checking at least once and the ODIS method at least once. You will be writing about a third scenario and it is your choice which skill you want to use. It would be great if your practice involved an intercultural interaction, but I understand that you may not have that opportunity, so any appropriate interaction would be fine. As you write your paper, remember toapply terminology you have learned and use specific examplesto illustrate your points. Respond to the following prompts: 1. Start with an introduction that discusses the impact of language (refer to Sapir-Whorf, cognitive-shaping function, group membership identify function, etc.). Include a thesis that lets the reader know the content of your paper. 2. For the body paragraphs, write about 3 scenarios in which you applied one of the skills. Identify the context of the situation and the various elements from the intercultural communication model introduced in Chapter 2 and in the lecture during week 1 that were present. Show how you applied perception-checking and/or the ODIS method by writing about what you said in each scenario and then telling how the other person responded. Identify the elements of each of the skills. 3. Conclude with an overall statement about being a flexible and mindful communicator (see the information from the end of Chapter 2). | |
