2. (A) At about 8500ft in altitude, the oxygen concentration drops to 15% of the total composition of air at an air temperature of 5C; the atmospheric pressure is about 0.72 atm. Assume that the nitrogen concentration makes up the difference in air composition. Calculate the respiratory rate needed to maintain the body oxygen requirements of 250mL/min. Assume that the tidal volume remains the same (at 500mL ) and that 35% of the tidal volume enters the blood stream and all of this would be used to meet the body's oxygen requirements. (B) Repeat the same calculations, but consider a person standing on Mt. Everest (elevation: 29,000 ft) where the temperature is still 5C, but the oxygen concentration is 6.9% and the atmospheric pressure is 0.3 atm. (Assume the individual is breathing without the aid of an oxygen tank.) ( A:BR=11.9 breaths/min)
