Speedy Laundry Services Co. is able to offer a one-day laundry services for their customers using the shirt-cleaning process given below. Incoming dirty shirts are soaked in an agitated tub containing the SuperClean laundry detergent and are then wrung out and sent to a rinse stage. The dirty SuperClean detergent is sent to a filter in which most of the dirt is removed, and the cleaned detergent is recycled back to join a stream of pure SuperClean, with combined stream serving as the feed to the agitated tub. Clean shirts SC Dirty shirts 7% SC Pure SuperClean (SC) 98% SC Agitated tub 88% SC Filter Recycled SC Each 100 kg of dirty shirts contains 1.3 kg of dirt and the company is able to remove 97% of the dirt through the shirt-cleaning process. For every 100 kg of dirty shirts, 19.0 kg of SuperClean detergent leaves with the clean shirts, of which 17.0 kg is wrung back into the tub. The detergent that enters the tub contains 98% SuperClean (the remainder dirt) and the detergent entering the filter contains 88% of SuperClean. The wet dirt leaving the filter contains 7% of Superclean. i. Perform a degree of freedom analysis, stating the number of unknown variables and total number of independent equations for the overall system, the mixing point with the recycle stream, around the tub (consider the returned SC from the clean shirts part of the tub so that there are only two inputs and two outputs around the tub) and around the filter. (4 marks) Determine how much pure SuperClean detergent (in kg) must be supplied for every 100kg of dirty shirts. (7 marks) ii. iii. What is the mass composition of the recycled stream? (9 marks)
