**** The answers must be from civilization CompuTech is a multinational American specialized in telecommunication, with factories in 16 countries. CompuTech philosophy is based on the idea that its business activities should embody strong Christian values. Further, subordinates should be given full responsibility in making and implementing decisions but should be held accountable for their results. John Smith, a 30-year-old American has been assigned by CompuTech to manage the establishment of communication networks in Nigeria/Africa. Smiths specific assignment was to (1) work with Nigerian government authorities and people to gain support and necessary arrangements, (2) establish an office and hire people who would be responsible for local operations, and (3) help foreign visitors get settled and feel comfortable living and working in Nigeria. To get things done, Smith was aware that there are Nigerian cultural traits that he should consider although it might affect operations of a foreign company doing business there. Business in Nigeria typically moves slowly; however, paying gratuities to people as a bribe in advance can speed the process. Because unemployment is high and hiring is generally done through personal connections, contacts typically recommended their relatives, who are usually hired. Furthermore, paying extra in order to get things done is common within the Nigerian culture. Moreover, Nigerian culture sometimes involves the international managers to participate in their rituals and ceremonies in order to get work done. Mr. Martin Vice President of the company wondered whether to continue to employ Smith in Nigeria. In particular, he was concerned about Smiths lifestyle, some of his business practices, such as paying bribes, which is illegal and or ethically unacceptable in the U.S, and his participation in Nigerian tribal rituals. Martin worried that Smiths practices contradicted ComupTech corporate culture and methods of operating elsewhere, that some of his actions touched on the unethical, and that some might actually be illegal under U.S. law.
