Despite the numerous attributes used to define critical thinking, questioning and research are ever present in concept. At its core, critical thinking is the processing of informationin the mind this takes the form of questions and justified answers. University of Chattanooga's Walker Center attaches interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation and self-regulation to critical thinking. Other attributes can be used, but I will focus on a few of these that I use when writing.

Analysis is one of the first skills I use when approaching an challenge. This is stripping an argument down to its thesis to understand the author's primary objective. Recently I saw a news article about the military expanding its military presence in the Philippines. Analyzing the language and points addressed, it was clear that the author's point was that the US military is a necessary counter to Chinese action in the South China Sea. Though this was never stated, the economic benefits of the sea, recent Chinese actions, and surrounding US bases made the argument clear with consideration.

I also use explanation a lot in work and academics. This is simply communicating finding in clear, concise language. It is often necessary at work to brief different agencies on logistics functions. Since this is not their career field, it is important to repackage regulations in a couple non-technical sentences. Explanation can also occur with diagrams and charts. This is an excellent way of presenting bulk information in a structured system.

One area I had not considered but is valuable is self-regulation. This is the process of reminding yourself to focus on the facts and to remove your personal opinions from the research. While we often do not think of this step, it is crucial in thinking critically. Without policing ourselves we can become susceptible to fallacies or disregard pertinent information.
