Polar bears are normally born with white fur, but occasionally cubs are born with brownish fur. Fur color that matches the background has been shown to provide an advantage to bears while hunting. Biologists initially survey bear coat- color and only find 1 in 5,000 cubs are born with brownish fur. 50 years later, as the amount of time the arctic is snow/ice free has increased, a second team of biologists find that the frequency of brown coat color has increased to 1 in 100.
