Police synopsis:

Incident #22-12539

On Thursday July 18th, 2019, at approximately 9:18 pm, police met with the victim of a robbery that occurred earlier at 7:45 pm at Webster Park, in Vaughan. The victim drove to the police station as they were afraid the suspects were going to return to the scene. Police obtained a statements from the victim learning the following:

• On July 16^th the victim posted an iPhone (Gold 12Max) on Kijiji for sale at $500.
• At approximately 6:00 pm, victim received a message from a Kijiji user named "Donald " who expressed interest in buying the phone.
• Victim and the suspect agreed to meet at Webster Park in Vaughan at 7:30pm for the sale.
• Victim communicated with the suspect through the phone number of 437-555-4726.
• Victim originally wanted the suspect to meet her in King however, the suspect was in Toronto and asked to meet halfway so the suspect proposed Webster Park.
• Eventually, victim #1 agreed to meet at Webster Park. She took her friend, Victoria.
• At 7:35 pm, the suspect shared his location over IMessage showing him at the south side of the Park.
• At 7:45 pm, the victim arrived and walked over to meet the "Donald" while Victoria sat in the car.
• Donald was standing by a tree with a second male (Suspect 2).
• Donald asked if the phone was locked and if it was stolen and asked to see it and the victim gave it to him.
• Donald went to open the sim card tray with his diamond earring that he took out of his ear
• The victim was concerned and told Donald "the deal was off" and reached for her phone
• Suspect 1 slapped her hand away and, Suspect 2 pushed her with his two hands in the chest/shoulder.
• The victim fell backward to the groundand both suspects ran away. She yelled but did not go after them.
• No weapons were used and the victim did not sustain any injuries are a result of the incident

Suspect #1: male, white, 5'10 ft - 6'0 ft, 19-26 yrs old, normal build, white sweater, white shorts with black stripes and zipper pockets, diamond earring in right ear, clean shaven, short hair on sides with it curly on top, hazel contacts, good teeth, no visible tattoos

A traffic ticket issued by an officer to the driver of a speeding car in the same area of Vaughan at 8 pm that night links the driver to an arrest in Toronto. A person arrested and identified by Toronto Police for a similar incident matches our suspect as does his co-accused. Further investigation and a lineup confirm them as suspects and The plan is to arrest them at court after their first appearance in court tomorrow.

You are the investigator in charge of the case and will be conducting the interview with the suspects when they are delivered to the station by the arrest team.

Interview Plan AssignmentThe purpose of this assignment is to have you develop an interview plan for the scenario provided. The assignment will draw on your exposure to interviewing since the start of the course to apply your learning to plan an interview for the suspect in a criminal investigation. The scenario is a simple street level robbery with one victim and two suspects who have been identified. You are the investigator in charge of the case based on the investigation the two suspects have been identified, arrested, and will be arriving at the station for you to interview.The assignment will consist of the following components:

• Write your aim for the interview
• Write out your objectives
• Create a comprehensive list of topics (can be bullet points/a list)
• Scenarios
  • Identify three 3-4 potential scenarios
  • For each scenario, identify the 2-3 most important topics to cover in the interview
  • Write at minimum one open ended question and one probing or appropriate closed question for each topic. For example:
    • Therefore with 4 scenarios X 2 topics X 2 questions = 16 questions
    • Therefore with 3 scenarios X 3 topics X 2 questions = 18 questions
    • Therefore with 3 scenarios X 2 topics X 2 questions = 12 questions
• Your route map (script)
• Your opening question and 2-3 alternative opening questions (they should match the scenarios identified)
• A list of the available (potential) evidence that can be used in the interview (SUE)
• Compile a list of additional questions to cover the topics you identified. These questions should cover off the topics not already captured in the Scenario Section. They should be written as if you were going to pose them to the suspect.
