Policymakers have debated raising the federal minimum wage rate for some time. One argument in support of raising the federal minimum wage has been that the pace of the federal minimum wage rates since the enactment of the FLSA do not track inflation. In fact, several states have set their own minimum wage rates (e.g., Massachusetts minimum wage rate set at $14.25/hour), which is permissible under the FLSA as long as the state rate is higher than the federal minimum rate of $7.25/hour.
