Population-Sample For each of the following situations describe the population and the sample.
(a) The question of whether caffeine (as found in coffee and soda) is bad for your health has been studied many times. A researcher randomly assigns 100 volunteers all age 18 to 29 to either drink 6 cups of caffeinated coffee in an hour or drink six glasses of filtered water. After the last drink each persons pulse rate is measured. The pulse rate is compared to the persons pulse rate taken before drinking.
(b) The National Football League (NFL) started the heads-up program to teach proper tackling technique and (hopefully) reduce the occurrence of concussions. The program is designed to teach proper tackling in youth football in the U.S. A study wants to assess whether youth football coaches are actually teaching tackling correctly. Coaches in Chicago, Los Angeles, and St. Louis (20 coaches in each city) agree to have a researcher tape their practices and analyze whether proper tackling is being taught.
(c) You know what July 4th means - fireworks! And, if your neighbors twelve year old isnt nearly burning down your neighborhood, it can be lots of fun. How much money is spent on fireworks each year at gas stations across the U.S.? A survey of 250 gas stations is taken and the amount of fireworks sold in the last year is calculated for each gas station.
