Postgraduate Diploma Course in Fashion Design Unit 1: Fundamental Techniques in Fashion Design Assignment 1 Assignment Brief Unit Introduction There are many skills and techniques fashion designers must learn to create innovative designs season after season. Technical skills are needed to develop ideas and create garments. Communication skills are used to present designs and get feedback from customers. In this unit you will learn how to: 1. Examine a customer\'s needs in order to research design ideas. 2. Experiment with design ideas and materials using different fashion design techniques. 3. Create a sketchbook that shows the development of designs and a portfolio that presents finished designs. 4. Review the quality of your design process and finished designs based on customer feedback. Assignment 1 Please invent a customer to complete this assignment. You are going to design a creative and inspirational garment for them for an event which you will choose. Task 1 \'What the Customer Wants\' In this task you will collect lots of information about your customer and start to research design ideas. 1. Start a new sketchbook and think carefully how you will organise it. 2. Collect information about your customer and the event they are going to. Record the information (70-150 words) and include details about: Who your customer is The garment you will design The season the garment is for The event the garment is for The colours, fabrics and patterns your customer likes/dislikes Your customer\'s budget 3. Your tutor will be using this scheme when reviewing your assignment. The following Pass criteria must be met in order to pass the assignment. Once you have achieved all Pass criteria in all assignments within the unit, you will then be able to progress to the next unit of your course. Pass criteria Criteria LO 1.1: Examine a customer\'s needs in order to research design ideas. Evaluate customer information to identify their needs: In a sketchbook, student evaluated a customer by annotating images, including information about them, the garment they want and what they need the garment for (Assignment 1, task 1). Criteria LO 1.2: Examine a customer\'s needs in order to research design ideas. Discuss the importance of a theme in relation to what the customer wants: In a sketchbook student used annotated images to discuss two themes and to identify how they can meet the customer\'s needs. Develop a design for a garment, based on a theme and customer needs: In a sketchbook, student added inspirational images; swatches of colour, materials and fabric based on their research. They annotated these images to explain why they meet the theme and how they inspire design ideas. They produced sketches of design concepts and annotated photographs of draping showing their design work. They produced sketches, swatches, photographs and fashion croquis to present a final concept based on the theme and customer\'s needs (Assignment 1, task 2). Criteria LO 2.2: Experiment with design ideas and materials using different fashion design techniques. Use draping to experiment with materials and test design ideas: Student produced photographs showing their experiments with draping. They tested different design ideas and they annotated the photographs to assess what worked well and what did not work in each test. (Assignment 1, task 2). Produce a sketchbook that includes a detailed assessment of the customer and their needs: Student produced a well arranged and tidy sketchbook that contains a detailed assessment of the customer and design themes, including all important elements and an examination of the two themes using annotated images and mind maps (Assignment 1, task 1). Criteria MO 2: Experiment with design ideas and materials using different fashion design techniques. Demonstrate a structured approach to research and experimentation in order to develop creative designs: Student produced a neat, ordered and easy-to-follow sketchbook that demonstrated a structured approach to design development from evaluating the customer\'s needs to researching ideas, choosing a theme, sketching design concepts, experimenting with draping and producing a final design concept. The sketchbook tells a story of clear progress in the student\'s design practice leading to the development of creative designs (Assignment 1, task 1 and 2). Merit criteria Distinction criteria Criteria DO 1: Demonstrate a highly creative response to what a customer wants and produce design work to a high standard: In a sketchbook, student demonstrated a highly creative response to what their customer wanted, evidenced through annotated sketches, swatches, photographs of draping experiments and fashion croquis. All photographs, sketches and fashion croquis were produced to a high standard (Assignment 1, task 2). Plagiarism is a serious academic offence.
