Power 8. Influence Challenge Situation 2: Teamwork Would Be Easy, if Not for the People! So here you go another semester, and a whole bunch of team project. As a junior in college, you have come to expect this pretty much every one of your classes requires that you do something with other people. While you theoretically see the value of this process for your future. it is also evident that the your present life can be very quickly complicated by this collaboration requirement. While you were crossing your ngers for relative peace in the teamwork department. maybe you didn't do it earnestly enough and there is a problem. In one of your classes you were put into a group with Ana, Charlie. and Amber. You have not worked with any of them before though you're pretty sure that you have taken classes together. You do recall noticing Charlie before he has a tendency to be quite outspoken in class. Ana. on the other hand is a bit more of an unknown she keeps to herself and hardly ever speaks unless explicitly spoken to. Even when that happens, she gets a bit ustered and it's almost painful to watch. You ask around about her and nd out that some consider you lucky to have her on your team she is very diligent and gets great grades. and avoids conict at all costs. Since you have a bit of a desire for leadership, you see Ana as a denite asset. Your biggest unknows is Amber she's a hit all over the place. She participates and socializes in some classes, in others she seems distracted and uninvolved. Your friends have contradictory opinions about her as well. So you really don't know what to think. A couple of weeks into the project, the problems started. You have some obligations at the end of the semester (including a destination wedding in Mexico which you need to attend since your only sister is getting married!), so you're trying to get things done early. Your Type A personality also prefers to act in advance and you've been pushing your teammates to make decisions and deliver results. Ana seems to be happy as a clam in this environment: she even started participating a bit more and you're so happy that you are able to bring that out in her. She still backs out of difficult conversations but you're ok with this since it allows you to just take charge of the situation. Charlie has proven himself to be a bit of a distraction actually. He always attends team activities but has a tendency to need a lot of 'air time' and sometimes you end up meeting for way longer than needed because he needs to get heard. But, when pushed, he can deliver mostly decent results - nothing you can't correct in revisions. The problem is with Amber. She started off well but then she missed a couple of meetings and she's been typically late with her deliverables. She makes promises and fails to execute on them. She also started skipping class and so it's become more difficult to communicate with her about pretty much anything. You still have a lot of work to do on this project and feel that as the implied leader of the team you need to address Amber's behavior. Considering what you know from the above description, craft a strategy designed to influence your Amber to change her behavior on this team. . Consider which approach would be more beneficial: thinking about this as a single conversation or rather as a process or a series of conversations. Explain this strategic choice and explore how this would work. What resources would be critical to your success? . Choose at least 5 different influence tactics presented in your class materials and explain how and why they would result in greatest gains in this case
