Creating and Using PowerPoint Slides

Using slides in addition to an Oral Speech can be a great benefit for the speaker and the audience. For the speaker, they should help clarify difficult or confusing information, provide transitional cues, and help to direct attention to important points. For an audience, they can be an interesting distraction from a long speech and they may help clarify the structure or outline of the speech.

Really good speakers are able to use slides to benefit and enhance their speech. They also remember that the slides should not take the place, or be more important than, the speech. When I see a speaker who has a whole deck of slides that look like the two below, I am likely going to have a hard time paying attention.

For your last assignment this semester (the next assignment), you will be preparing a 4-7 minute speech (on a topic I assign to you). This will likely be a topic of which you have little knowledge. I will ask that you think of your audience as having little or no knowledge of the topic. So, you will be presenting new information to an uninformed audience. You can use 5-8 slides to present this material. That is, 5-8 really good slides.

So what makes a good slide? While the two below have important information regarding slides, they just arent very interesting. If fact, they are my least favorite types of slides. I like maps, charts, graphics, photos, imbedded music or video (if appropriate). I like just about anything besides just plain text.

So for this assignment, I would like you to look at the following 10 slides and write up 2 positive and 2 negative comments for each. Good slides are very hard to get right. Tell me what you think. (there is one slide in this bunch that you might have a hard time coming up with two positive comments however)

Slides for Powerpoint Analysis Assignment On a Word document, write 2 positive comments and 2 comments of criticism for each slide. You may be brief; use bullets. If all of your comments happen to be negative, come up with 3-4 comments. Do the same if all of your comments happen to be positive.
