Prelab 5: For Part II of this lab, you will work with the following system in static equilibrium: R Mg Center of Mass mg Fx T Pivot a.) Using the first condition for static equilibrium (F = 0), write an expression for the sum of the horizontal forces acting on the system. Please note where the pivot is located. Rearrange the equation to get Fx by itself. b.) Similarly, write an equation for the sum of the vertical forces acting on the system. Please note where the pivot is located. Rearrange the equation to get Fy by itself. c.) Write an equation for the sum of clockwise torques acting about the pivot for this system. Note: for these the angle is 0. d.) Write an equation for the sum of counterclockwise torques acting about the pivot for this system. Note: for these the angle is oor (90 - 0). e.) In equilibrium, the sum of all the torques clockwise (-) and counter-clockwise (+) equals zero, thus keeping the system at rest. Use the results from parts above to write the equation showing t = 0. During the lab, you will measure m, M, r, and R to determine if this equation is true.
