Daniella had been an active person all her life, having raised several children, caring for her family, and occasionally working outside of the home. Now, however, she is in her early $80$s and widowed from her loving husband, Carlos. She has lived for the past several years with her daughter, Sophia, and son$-$in$-$law, Antonio, since suffering a heart attack and minor stroke that left her unable to live alone without some assistance and support. The arrangement has worked well, and she has been well cared for. Now, however, Antonio has reached retirement age, and he and Sophia want to move to Florida. Daniella does not want to leave the community in which she has lived all her life and move that far away. Her other children live in the area but have neither the room nor the resources to include her in their homes. What is she to do$?$ A home health nurse who comes in periodically to monitor her heart condition told her about a newly opened assisted living$/$residential care facility in their town. After much consideration, as well as some discussion among the family members, Daniella was admitted to that facility. It was private pay; the retirement income Carlos had left her made her ineligible for Medicaid, and this type of care was not covered by Medicare. Her supportive family also contributed to make this move possible, as it seemed to be just what she needed. Initially, Daniella needed little help with ADLs, but she was somewhat forgetful and needed someone to make sure she took her medication when needed. In the assisted living facility, she had a very attractive efficiency apartment. The facility provided her with supervision, housekeeping and laundry services, and a communal dining room where she could get her meals $($she could fix snacks in her apartment$).$ It also provided social interaction with others, including a variety of activities to keep her mentally sharp and designed to help her maintain as much of her independence as possible. Daniella thrived in the assisted living setting. She had her own place to live, but was neither isolated nor without assistance when needed. Her children and grandchildren could visit her as frequently as she wanted $($although Sophia and Antonio could not come from Florida quite as often as she would have liked$),$ and even some of her friends from the community could visit her.Over time, her health deteriorated slowly but persistently. She began having more difficulty accomplishing ADLs such as bathing and dressing herself. As that happened, the assisted living facility provided her with the additional services without her having to leave her familiar apartment. Eventually, she may need to move to a nursing facility, but for now, she is doing just fine as is$.$
