Writing a good essay--much like making a good argument--involves organizing one's thoughts and presenting them clearly and in a way that will flow naturally for the ordinary reader. This means that, no matter what you are writing about, your first step should be to figure out what simple structure will inform your essay.

In this case, the task is to present a narrative. Narratives, of course, have a beginning, a middle, and an end, so when presenting a sort narrative about law, identifying an early case decided under an archaic rule, a case when some progress has occurred, and a case where the current rule governs is a good approach.
