presentation based on this Vignette : The Lin family arrives at your office 10 minutes early for their scheduled session. Present for this session were Bruce Lin (father, 52 years old), Jackie Lin (Mother, 44 years old), Mike Lin (son, 20 years old), Sarah Lin (daughter, 17 years old), and Bobby Lin (son, 14 years old). All five members of the family presented accepting to the therapeutic process. As the family began to share their story, you become aware that Bruce is a biologist and Jackie is an optometrist. Mike and Sarah are both in college, and Bobby is a high school standout (academic and athletic). When you ask how you can be of assistance, all members looked to Bruce as he said, we are a typical family that looks good, but we are not doing well. Jackie jumps in and shares that Mike is in a relationship with another man, Sarah has started a serious relationship with a boy of a different ethnic group (she is only seventeen, says Bruce), and Bobby has P a g e 2 | 4 taken to marijuana as most people take to walking. Bruce interrupts his wife Jackie and states that they do not know if Bobby is using marijuana or not. What they do know is that he is hanging around other kids that they suspect use marijuana. Bruce continues by saying that Bobby's academic and athletic performance does not indicate drug usage. From the corner of your eye, you notice Jackie shaking her head in disbelief. With both hands over his face in frustration, Mike looks at his father and says, "It is only right that you continue to protect the screwup. We all know he is always high, and you refuse to see it." As Bruce attempts to respond, Sarah nods her head in agreement with Mike and says that she graduated early from high school and Mike is doing exceptionally well in college, but whenever they come home their dad only focuses on what they have done that he does not approve of. Sarah goes on to share that Jackie sees the good in all of them. Bobby remains silent and seems distant and disengaged. Jackie adds to the conversation by saying that Sarah and Mike have always made the family proud even though they disregard family traditions. Given that you are seasoned at your craft, you noticed that the parents did not say anything about themselves, and so you asked. After a full minute of silence, Bruce says that they are fine. As he says this, all three kids roll their eyes and Jackie shifts in her seat. Bruce elaborates and says that they work to provide for their family. Mike then shares that his father provides financially and nothing more. In a low voice, Sarah shares that her parents only talk to one another in the presence of strangers but not when they are alone. She also states that her parents are constantly bickering at one another. Bobby joins the conversation by saying, "I hear you both arguing all night. Dad, are you really cheating on mom?" These are the Instructions: As beginning therapists, it is important to evaluate the nonverbal structures presented by clients. Part of those structures include subsystems that form within the operational/functional system used by the client unit to engage and interact with one another. These subsystems make themselves visible within the therapeutic environment by way of alliances, display of power, unspoken privileges, collaborations, supported or rejected narratives, and inter-relational boundaries to list a few. Clearly identifying the structures and supporting context presented by the family within the vignette. You will need to identify a minimum of four subsystems that maintain the homeostatic state for the family in question. As you identify each structure, be sure to clearly explain how the presence of the subsystem is maintaining the presenting problem as shared by the client unit. In other words, articulate your assumption of the developed context in which the family is comfortable operating within. As a reminder, please start your presentation with an introduction slide and end your presentation with a summary slide. Slide Three (can be more than one slide): Subsystem 1 1. Clearly identify the interactions between members of the family that creates the issue you have identified. 2. Clearly address why the presence of the interaction between subsystems maintains the homeostatic state of the problem. In other words, offer a rationale for why you have identified said interactive challenges between members of the family. P a g e 3 | 4 Slide Four (can be more than one slide): Subsystem 2 1. Clearly identify the interactions between members of the family that creates the issue you have identified. 2. Clearly address why the presence of the interaction between subsystems maintains the homeostatic state of the problem. In other words, offer a rationale for why you have identified said interactive challenges between members of the family. Slide Five (can be more than one slide): Subsystem 3 1. Clearly identify the interactions between members of the family that creates the issue you have identified. 2. Clearly address why the presence of the interaction between subsystems maintains the homeostatic state of the problem. In other words, offer a rationale for why you have identified said interactive challenges between members of the family. Slide Six (can be more than one slide): Subsystem 4 1. Clearly identify the interactions between members of the family that creates the issue you have identified. 2. Clearly address why the presence of the interaction between subsystems maintains the homeostatic state of the problem. In other words, offer a rationale for why you have identified said interactive challenges between members of the family. Slide Seven: Case Analysis 1. Clearly address which of the subsystems seems to hinder the family from moving forward by offering a convincing rationale. 2. Offer a recommendation for how the interactive structure of the family can change to minimize the presenting issues.
