This case study involved an upgrade of a heating system in an office facility used by a major non profit organization. A new heating system has been installed based on recommendation made by students ding a service learning project. The new energy consumption is indicated by fuel use during the last few years the new system ahs been in use, The key question is did the new system meet the objectives of the original service learning project. The annual energy outlook is compiled by the U.S. Energy Information Agency. Its projections are summarized below. " EIA projects that commercial floorspace will grow significantly over the next 30 years in the United States; however, energy use grows at a much slower pace. We assume wider adoption of commercial building sensors and controls over time and other factors, including energy efficiency gains and warmer weather, will all contribute to declines in commercial energy consumption to meet heating, ventilation, and lighting needs. Other commercial energy uses will increase. We project an 8% decline in the energy intensity of commercial buildings by 2050 (a measure of energy consumed per square foot of floorspace). Commercial floorspace grows by 33%, and total commercial energy use grows by 22% between 2020 and 2050.11 Energy consumption, commercial floorspace, and enerqy intensity fi1 e 1 Overview of agreed upon service-learning activities/project(s) for this partner. This facility is located in Maine, It houses a variety of programs (seniors, adult and child food programs, blind services), administrative services (quality and compliance), and has a training space. The project will determine the best replacement heating system for this old building, which has two separate heating zones producing extremely varied temperatures throughout the building. It is heated by two oil-fired boilers that have reached/exceeded their useful life. page 2 of 4 The client is considering upgrading their current oil heating systems to a more efficient heating system at their Maine facility. This report provides a detailed analysis to determine if CCM should continue to use their current heating system, install a single new efficient boiler or install a heat pump system. Oil consumption data was analyzed to determine current heating costs and the heat load of the building. A Buderus oil boiler system and Mitsubishi Electric heat pump system is proposed based on the 248,899 Btu/h heat load of the building. Data was analyzed and compared over a twenty-year period with a 3% inflation rate applied to the fuel cost and maintenance fees. The initial investment of the Buderus system is $8,544.31 and $40,706.84 for the Mitsubishi Electric system. It was found that over the twenty-year period the Buderus oil systems provided an average yearly savings of $3,278.47 and the Mitsubishi Electric heat pump system provided an average yearly of $10,879.89. Over the twenty-year period the Net Present Value (NPV) of the Buderus system compared to the current system is $21,348.40, the NPV of the Buderus system compared to the Mitsubishi Electric system is $25,997.03 and when comparing the Mitsubishi Electric system to the current system, the NVP is $58,952.25. The initial investment of the Buderus boiler is considerably less than that of the heat pump system. THey chose to install the boiler system. Questions' 1. Review the oil consumption before the boiler change and the natural gas consumption with the new system. Does the change in energy use justify the investment.? Don't forget to take heating degree days into account. 2. How did this project change the client's carbon footprint? 3. If the old system had 5 more years of life should a replacement analysis be done? 4. Would you change any assumptions originally used? \begin{tabular}{|l|l|} \hline Meter Number & A16625 \\ \hline Meter Type & GAS SVC \\ \hline Meter Location & OUTSIDE \\ \hline \end{tabular} User Name: nblack Transaction Report 14-Jan-2019 9:38 am Cust\# 2493457 Date Type: Posting Date CATHOLIC CHARITIES MAINE Transactions from 01/01/2018 thru 12/31/2018 P.O. 10660 PORTLAND, ME 04104 Current Balance: 7,115.71 Options: Tank Num =1
