Lab 4 - Speed Purpose: To measure students' walking speed. Introduction: Speed is a measure of how fast an object is moving. It is defined as the change in distance per unit of time and described using the equation: Ad V = Ad V At At , here v is the speed, Ad is the distance traveled, and At is the time traveled. The units of speed are that of distance (or length) over time. For example, m/s, km/h, and mph (mi/h) are all units of speed. During a motion with constant speed a moving object covers same amount of distance every unit of time (e.g., every second). Procedure: 1. Measure the distance from one side of the room to another along a straight line. 2. Mark at least 5 locations on that line and measure the distance from one end of the room to that point. 3. Have one of your team members start at the end of the room and walk along the line at a steady pace 4. Record the time it takes for the person who is walking to get to each station on the line using the stopwatch app in your phones.5. Repeat this using different team members walking at different rates. Data: (Already collected for you: make sense of it, do the calculations, and answer the questions Student 1 data Cumulative time for person to reach each station Station distance (m) (S) 1 4.49 2 2 8.00 3 3 12.00 4 4 16.50 5 5 20.00 Student 2 data Station distance Cumulative time for person to reach each station (m) (s) 1 2.00 2 2 4.00 3 3 5.73 A 4 7.50 5 5 9.50Student 3 data Station distance Cumulative time for per(sson to reach each station ("1) '1 2 3 4 5 1. Plot the distance versus time. In each graph time should be the horizontal axis (x-axis), and the distance should be the vertical axis (y-axis). 2. Draw a best fit line for each experiment. The best t line is a straight line that best represents the trend the data shows (assuming the trend is linear). To get the best t line. input the data into the following website: hit SINWWW. HCUTIDF ICIassroomResourcesillluminations!InteractivestineofBe Fi Check "Show the best fit line\" box so that the slope of the graph will be shown. 3. Record the slope of each line in the table below. 1. What does the slope of the line tell you? 2. How much time would it take each person to walk to the nearby public library (located at about 2 km distance away from our college}? Dr' in ntin: Discuss whether or not we achieved the goal set out in the "Purpose" section. Discuss the data and the graph. Does it show results that were expected? How does a graph for a student walking faster differ from a graph for a student walking slower? Discuss experimental errors. Was there any uncertainty in determining whether the walker was "at" a station? Was there any uncertainty in determining whether the time when the person reached a station? What else might have contributed to uncertainties
