Print Rich Environments: A print rich environment can be simply defined as a classroom where young children are given a variety of opportunities to interact with many different forms of print. It is important to expose children to literacy throughout their learning environment, but many preschool teachers do not have a good understanding of how preschoolers learn and end up creating inappropriate word walls to fulfill the literacy concept in the classroom. Words on the wall are sometimes difficult for younger children to understand and interact with in order for them to gain a better understanding of the words and the meanings. Young children need to be able to "interact" with the print in the classroom in a variety of ways (Ex) Touching the letters and tracing them with their fingers or being able to place the word next to their paper as they are writing. Word walls in a preschool classroom are connected with the writing center where students freely post new words they learn to say and write. Teacher-driven word walls are not appropriate in a preschool classroom and not appropriate in a Kindergarten classroom if the children are not able to interact with the words beyond just seeing them. Word walls are more appropriate for older children that have gained higher level skills related to literacy understanding
