Which of the three elements of the project triangle are most important? Time? Cost? Scope? Move the µ symbol to graphically represent the project’s priorities. By identifying the priorities for the project as a whole, you make it easier to manage changes going forward. Note: Individual stakeholders may have differing priorities within the project triangle—that is addressed in the stakeholder management plan and/or communications plan.
Consider:
- What would happen if the project were delayed? Would additional resources be freed up?
- What would happen if the project were to go over budget?
- What would happen if the project were to grow too big?
- Did you explain your reasoning for the prioritization given?
This project’s priority triangle is diagrammed at right. Following consultation with our clients, and after careful consideration, the project team believes that:
- The most important priority is [scope/cost/time].
- The second most important priority is [scope/cost/time].
- The lowest priority is [scope/cost/time].
Identify the major expected, measurable outputs from the project that comprise the majority of the project’s work. Note: You are focusing on the outputs, not the processes required to generate them. Deliverables should be clear, simple and relatively unambiguous (this is why processes are not used as deliverables). They link backward to the project charter and are developed parallel to the WBS.
Note: Projects should always include their own deliverables within themselves as a reminder to both the project manager and the client that this is the expectation this project is setting.
Example deliverables include:
- A market survey to determine demand for product X.
- A completed kitchen meeting the outlined performance specifications.
- A day-by-day itinerary for a 13-day backpacking trip in Asia.
Consider:
- Did you include the project deliverables themselves within your deliverables?
- Did you include any interim deliverables necessary to generate your final deliverables (e.g., marketing plan, blueprints, AGLC license)?
- Did you include a celebration for the project team?
- Are you able to define the completion criteria for each deliverable?
For each deliverable outlined above, define the deliverable. What does it look like (completion criteria)? Who will approve it? How will changes to the deliverable’s specifications be made and approved? When will the deliverable be completed?
Consider:
- Did you name the deliverable something reasonable?
- Can you define the completion criteria for the deliverable?
- Do the responsibilities and accountabilities line up with your team charter?
For each deliverable outlined above, define the deliverable. What does it look like? Who will approve it? How will changes to the deliverable’s specifications be made and approved? When will the deliverable be completed?
