Privacy v. Protections Reflection Assignment (10%)

Technology is changing the way that police organizations conduct their day-to-day operations. We do not often think of technology in policing, aside from cybercrime, but everything from improved vehicles to the latest in detection software play a pivotal role in policing today.

Course Learning Outcomes

1. Analyze current issues impacting the Criminal Justice System. 2. Analyze Criminal Justice policies based on crime statistics and crime control theories. 3. Analyze personal unconscious biases.

WHAT

After listening and watching the following resources on the use of surveillance technology, create a reflection piece about your thoughts on this possibly new way of policing.

There are videos here for you to use as sources. You must use other sources of information in addition to these resources; be sure to cite and reference each source utilized in standard APA style.

After watching, select a surveillance technology mentioned here or in class. You will then reflect on the following questions:

1) Explain how this technology can assist in law enforcement in, search and rescue, accident reconstruction, violent crime, etc. Use an example.

2) Some people believe that drones and other surveillance technologies are a violation of our privacy laws. Do you think that this technology should be used by law enforcement,yes or no?

3) What are some of the privacy concerns that have already been address by Canadian law or what can you envision being a privacy concern in relation to this technology in the future? Name at least two current laws that this technology could impact.

Marks will be awarded for your description and explanation of the technology, how you address privacy concerns and overall presentation.
