The machines all have processing time of exactly 1 min (fixed constant). The up- and downtimes of the machines all follow exponential distribution with MTBF = 40 min and MTTR = 10 min. Each buffer has capacity of 10. (a) Use Simul8 to estimate the (steady state) throughput of the production line. (b) Use Simul8 to estimate the (steady state) average work-in-process of each buffer. (c) Use Simul8 to estimate the (steady state) starvation and blockage of each machine. (d) Use Simul8 to estimate the (steady state) utilization of each machine (i.e., fraction of time the machine is working). (e) Comment on your observations of the system performance measures obtained above. (f) Now, if you have a chance to decrease one machine's cycle time to 0.5 min, which one should it be in order to maximize the resulting throughput? Use simulation to support your answer.
