Problem #1: You work at a pharmaceutical company and are told that you can extract a new drug (D) from the leaves of a tropical plant. This drug is extracted through a 3-stage process. You are told that you need 100 kg of leaf to get 1 kg of drug. Stage 1a Extraction of drug: In the first stage, 620 kg of leaf is added to a mixer along with 3300 kg of a solvent mixture. The solvent mixture contains 16.5 wt% ethanol and the rest water. The solvent and leaf are mixed for many hours in a batch mixer. During this time, some of the drug diffuses from the leaf into the solvent mixture. After mixing, the contents of the mixer are discharged through a filter. The liquid filtrate leaving the filter contains only 1% of the leaf fed to the mixture and is sent to a holding tank. The solid cake (spend leaf and entrained liquid) is sent to a 2nd mixer. The entrained liquid has the same composition as the filtrate and is 15% of the mass of the liquid charged to the mixer. (The extracted drug has a negligible effect on the total mass and volume of spent leaf and filtrate.) Stage 1b Extraction of drug: In the 2nd mixer, the spent leaf from the first mixer is added along with the filtrate from the 3rd mixer (See below). The leaf is extracted for a couple more hours and the contents are then released to a 2nd filter. The filtrate from the 2nd mixer contains 1 wt% of the leaf fed to the 2nd mixer and is released to the same holding tank as above. The solid cake that contains the spent leaf and entrained liquid is send to the 3rd mixer. The entrained liquid mass is 15% of the mass of liquid charged to the 2nd mixer. Stage 1c Extraction of drug: In the 3rd mixer, the spent leaf from the 2nd mixer is added along with 2720 kg of the solvent solution. The mixer contents are filtered and the filtrate (containing 1% of the leaf sent to the 3rd mixer) is sent back to the 2nd mixer and the solid cake is discarded. The mass of the entrained liquid in the solid cake is 15% of the mass of the liquid charged to the mixer. A. Draw and label the process. For now, just include leaf and solvent and assume that the drug doesn't add to the masses of any stream. B. Fill in the table below with total mass in each stream. C. Perform an overall mass balance and overall component mass balance to ensure that you numbers are correct. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Total solvent Ethanol Water Leaf Total (solvent + Leaf)
