Problem 3 (25 points) - Simple Refrigeration Cycle An air conditioning system running the simple refrigeration cycle (compressor-condenser-expansion valve-evaporator) with R-134a is used to keep a room at 26C. The room gains heat at a rate of 310 kJ/min from the combined "thermal load" of heat transfer through the walls and the electronics inside the house. The condenser of the refrigeration cycle operates at 1400 kPa. At the compressor inlet and condenser exit, the refrigerant is saturated vapor and saturated liquid, respectively. The refrigerant enters the compressor at a rate of 0.1 m/min and the isentropic efficiency of the compressor is 79%. a) Draw this cycle on both Ts and P - h diagrams. b) As it flows through the evaporator, the refrigerant is 10.29C cooler than the room. What is the operating pressure of the evaporator? c) What is the temperature of the refrigerant at the compressor outlet? d) There are people in the room generating heat. Determine the rate of heat generation by these people. e) Determine the COP of this air conditioner. If the outside air temperature is 34C, how does this compare with the maximum COP of an air conditioning system operating between the same room and outside temperatures?
