Problem 3 - Average Temperature Note: You will need to use a computer for this problem. Please let me know as soon as possible if you have trouble completing the problem due to computer access. PREPARATION a) Find the last two digits of your student id number, call it DD. b) Calculate (DD)mod 58. You can use an online calculator: https://www.calculators .org/math/modulo.php You can learn more about the modulo operator at the website. Modulo is an important operator in number theory, computer science, and home loans. 6) Go to the Excel le with our data at: https : //tinyurl . com/LuiAveTemp You may copy or download the le to your own computer. DATA SETUP Navigate to the sheet for your county within the Excel le. a) Choose a month you would like to study. If you cannot decide a month, choose the month that a friend or family member was born. Use the lter at the top of the sheet to focus on the data for your selected month. b) There are 127 years of temperature readings data. You decide how much of the data you want to use, but it must contain at least 20 data points. a For your data set, change the starting year by typing at the top of the sheet the year you choose your data to begin. If your choose to start at year 1960, type 1960. 0 Do not change the sheet for your county signicantly. Other students may use the same sheet. c) Go to https : //www . desmos . com/calculator/j azcrotqnl a Copy and paste your data set to Desmos. You will have to use keyboard shortcuts. Otherwise, you have to enter the data manually. I've set up different regression equations for you. (1) Click on \"Share your graph\" and copy the URL that is given. Include the URL in your report/writeup. Include in your report / writeup, o The last two digits of your student ID a (DD)mod58 0 Your county 0 The URL from the Desmos \"Share your graph\" button Go to the next page for the analysis. Problem 3 - Average Temperature - continued ANALYSIS 1. For the month you chose, describe a few possible reasons for the uctuations in the temper- ature. Feel free to look up information about your county online, but this is not necessary. For the data you used, did you use the data for all 127 years or did you only use a subset of the data? Explain your reason(s) for choosing the data subset you used. Write out the different regressions given by Desmos. Use at least 3 signicant digits or more (three nonzero numbers, e.g. 0.0000421 has three sig gs). For each model, what is the predicted average temperature (a) 5 years after the end of the data set? (b) 10 years after the end of the data set? For each regression equation, nd the derivative of the function. What do the derivatives say about the rate of change for a middle data point in your data set? Interpret the values in a complete sentence using the context of the problem (use the units!) . Which of the regressions best ts the data? Which are good models for the data trends? Explain your reason(s) using complete sentences. Imagine you are writing a report to give to scientists who don't know how to do calculus (but they know algebra terms)
