PROBLEM: ORGAN DONATION AND THE UAGA Laurel Singer, age 16, her sister Rebecca, age 22, and Rebecca's friend Peter Klaus, also age 22, were brought to General Hospital after an extremely serious car accident. Although they were alive when treated by the emergency medical technicians at the scene, Laurel, Rebecca, and Peter have died. Physicians have initiated standard procedures to maintain respiration and circulation in their bodies and preserve their organs for transplantation, including administering certain drugs and inserting a catheter into an artery to provide profusion. Time is critical as organs deteriorate quickly. The Singer sisters' parents have arrived at the hospital, but Peter's parents are on vacation somewhere in Asia. Peter's friends and the hospital continue to try to contact his parents but without success. Laurel and Rebecca each signed the organ donor card on the back of their driver's licenses; however, their parents have told the hospital to discontinue the organ maintenance procedures and objected to removal of their organs. Peter didn't have a driver's license or donor card and hadn't enrolled on the state's donor registry, but his friends all agree that he was clear about his intentions to be an organ donor. May 'surgeons remove Laurel's, Rebecca's, and Peter's transplantable organs? Under the UAGA, what must the hospital do in order to proceed? Do the Singer parents have the right to stop the removal of their daughters' organs? Should the hospital abide by their wishes? If Peter's parents arrive after the surgery has been completed and object to the removal of their son's organs, would they have any action against the physicians or the hospital? Why would Peter not have signed a donor card or signed up with his state's online donor registry?
Please answer the questions in the last paragraph, Your response should contain specific references/citation to the UAGA.
