Problem question The Church of the One True God is a charity of the Christian faith that provides help and assistance for homeless people. including running soup kitchens and advice services. The charity wishes to appoint a new head chef to facilitate the expansion of this service to a wider region and prepares an advertisement of the post which includes the statement that 'practising Christians are preferred. Ahmed is friends with Susan. who works at the charity as an administrator, Ahmed is a Muslim and spoke with some of his friends {also of the Muslim faith] about the job. but they were dissuaded from applying. Despite this, Ahmed, in part due to encouragement from Susan, did apply but was not shortlisted for an interview despite having previous experience and being well qualified to under- take the responsibilities. Ahmed told Susan of this. Susan was very annoyed at what she considered was racism and she made a complaint to the Equality and Human Rights Commission and informed her local paper, which ran the story as a feature.
