PROBLEM: Symphony, an Accounting Designation holder, recently relocated to the city. To make the transition easier, she accepted an offer from her brother, Bill, and is now the new accounting manager for his chain of family restaurants. In order to familiarize herself with the operations, she decides to visit some of the restaurants. When she arrives, she is greeted with enthusiasm by the employees. Her brother, Bill, makes it his goal to get to know all his staff personally and treat them like family. Bill's restaurants also make guests feel at home, with lots of antiques, 1960s memorabilia and old-fashioned service. To complete the look and feel, he had rotary telephones and crank-style cash registers installed, and the serving staff call out the orders to the kitchen, rather than keying orders into an electronic system. A few days after her visit to the first restaurant, Symphony makes a trip to another restaurant after the dinner rush has ended. When she meets the employees, Symphony recognizes two of the kitchen staff who had been working at the first restaurant. The next morning she decides to visit yet another restaurant on her way to work, after the breakfast crowd is gone. Once again, when she is introduced to one of the kitchen staff, Symphony remembers meeting her the night before. When she gets to the office that morning, she asks her brother why some employees appear to be working at more than one location and, furthermore, why the one employee she met that morning was also working the late shift the night before. Before he responds, Bill ushers her into his office and closes the door. He tells Symphony that a few of his kitchen staff are new immigrants and that he is trying to help them earn a living. Symphony asks if they are legally allowed to work in Canada, to which Bill responds, "I don't ask, and they don't tell me. I just pay them in cash, which saves me from paying payroll taxes as well." He says that without his support, these individuals would not be able to send money to their families back in their home country and, what's more, they would not be able to support themselves in Canada. Since they are so motivated to make money, Bill lets them work as many hours as they want, and many of them end up working at two or more restaurants. Bill says that, in the city, many of the immigrants who can't find work from a legitimate business may be at a higher risk of being lured into illegal activity to make money. If anything, Bill says he is helping make the lives of these individuals better, and their communities safer. He tells Symphony to keep their discussion confidential as he doesn't want to draw attention to people who he believes are some of his best employees. Required: 1. Discuss the following questions: a.
