Question
Problem: You are going to conduct a hypothesis test regarding the median price for housing in a current zipcode in a city of your choosing.
Problem:You are going to conduct a hypothesis test regarding the median price for housing in a current zipcode in a city of your choosing.
Step 1.Choose a zip code and find the median price for housing in that zipcode. Note, we have to use the median because that is the way the census measures housing prices. You can enter:
"median house price in [zipcode]"
in Google and a link to Zillow.com should appear. You can use this median price as thein your hypothesis test.
Step 2.Construct and state your hypothesis regarding the median housing price found inStep 1.You choose your own alternative hypothesis, e.g. the median housing price is changed, increased or decreased.Show the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis.
Step 3. Pick your own level of significance(Common values are 0.05, 0.10, 0.01)
Step 4. Collect a sample of data and find the median value and standard deviation. To collect your data, you will use the real estate website Zillow.com.Go to Zillow.com and select a zipcode. Zoom in on the map until you can see all housing prices, randomly pick 30 houses and record the housing price.
Step 5.Enter your 30 data values into Excel and use the MEDIAN and STDEV.S functions to get your sample mean and sample standard deviation.
Step 6.At this point, follow the 7 steps we have used in class to build hypothesis tests:
Suggested process for Hypothesis Testing with one sample
- Extract all relevant variable values from the problem description
- Sketch a picture of the situation and the shaded region(s) corresponding to thep-value.
- *do on by hand on separate paper
- Identify null and alternate HypothesesH0: _______Ha: _______
- State the distribution to use and determine right, left or two tail
- Find p-value using the correct application of NORM.DIST or T.DISTdepending on left/right/two tail
- Indicate the correct decision "reject" or "do not reject" the null hypothesis (remember rejectH0if p <)
- In complete sentence or sentences, write an appropriate conclusion (sufficient or insufficient evidence).
