Prepare a boiling water bath using to of tap water in a beaker.
Using weighing paper, carefully weigh five samples of with the masses and and transfer them into large test tubes.
Note: It is important that the test tubes are dry and you transfer the into the test tubes first before you add the water.
Add distilled water to each of the samples in the tubes, mix well, and mark the liquid level on the test tube. Place all test tubes in the boiling water bath ensuring that the liquid level in the test tube is below the liquid level of the boiling water bath.
When any solution has completely dissolved this may require some mixing using a stirring rod remove the numbered test tube from the boiling water bath, quickly check to make sure the liquid level in the test tube has not changed. If the level has dropped, bring the level back to the original level with distilled water and mix. Insert a thermometer into the solution and measure the temperature at which the first crystals begin to precipitate. Record the temperature on the data sheet.
