Procedure This experiment is strictly qualitative and involves no calculations. This is, however, an exercise in observation. You are expected to find following things and carefully follow the procedure and describe in (reasonable) detail your observations. 1. Charging insulating materials I Find a plastic straw and rub it with a wool cloth. Keep that straw on a bottle as following figure. Take another plastic straw and rub with same wool cloth. Bring the second rod close to, but not touching the first rod, and observe what happens. What do you observe? I Find a glass rod and rub it with silk cloth. Bring it closer to the previously charged plastic straw. What do you observe? u.- '\\ a _ AA- 0 Carry out a detailed study of the various combinations of rods and materials you have available to you. You should be able to organize the rod-material combinations into at least two categories (according to whether the second rod after rubbing attracts or repels the first rod, for example). Creating a table might help. 2. Soda can attraction and/or repulsion Take one rod-material combination from previous part (which provides a strong charge to the rod) and rub the rod with the material to charge the rod. Place an empty soda can on its side on a at surface, and bring the charged rod close to, but not touching the side of the can. What do you observe? Draw a picture to explain your Observations. Now use a second rod-material combination from previous part, one in which the second rod attracted the rod you used above. Place an empty soda can on its side on a at surface, and bring the second charged rod close to, but not touching the side of the can. What do you observe? Draw a picture to explain your observations. Now instead of rod, rub a balloon with wool cloth. Place an empty soda can on its side on a at surface and bring the charged balloon closer to the empty soda can. What do you observe? Draw a picture to explain your observations. 3. Styrofoam plates repulsion - Find 2 Styrofoam plates. Rub each plate with same piece of cloth. Try to place them as shown in the following figure. What do you observe? Draw a picture to explain your observations
