You have been hired by Tesla to design the user interface for a mobile app that will control their next generation vehicle.

This vehicle will no longer use traditional dashboard$-$ based controls. Rather, this vehicle will be self$-$driving and will rely exclusively on the app for all controls

Key activities

During the reminder of the semester, you will prepare $5$ deliverables:

$1.$ Write an initial set of requirements based on your understanding of the needs.

$2.$ Conduct interviews with at least three individuals who might buy a self driving vehicle to update those user requirements

$3.$ Design and prototype an interactive app that satisfies your users$$ requirements.

$4.$ Conduct usability tests with at least three individuals using your prototype

$5.$ Revise your design based on your usability test results

Grading

Each assignment is worth $100$ points, but weighted differently in how it will contribute to your final project grade.

Final grade will be based on the following weighting:

$1.$ Initial project requirements $(5\%)$

$2.$ User research report and updated requirements $(20\%)$

$3.$ Initial design prototypes $(15\%)$

$4.$ Usability test report and videos $(30\%)$

$5.$ Final prototype and presentation $(30\%)$

Deliverable $1$: Initial requirements

$$ Define an initial set requirements for each of the four app functions listed on slide $4$

$$ Ensure you you have a comprehensive set requirements sufficient to completely describe the $4$ app functions to a development team

$$ Submit the requirements. Writing a report with introduction $/$ front matter is not required

Deliverable $2$: Overview $$ Type: Interviews

$$ Number of interviews: three different people, each representing $3$ different user groups$/$personas $($total $3$ people$)$

$$ Interviews should be between $30-45$ minutes each

Deliverable $2$: User research report

Report should include the following sections:

$$ Introduction $$ not needed

$$ Learning goals $$ not needed

$10$ points: User groups $$ list and explain the user groups you selected; detail why you selected these particular user groups

$15$ points: Overview of method $$ detail how you executed the interviews. Include basic participant demographics in tabular form.

$15$ points: Interview script

$30$ points: Learnings & updated requirements $$ present your key findings and explain how you translated those findings into requirements.

$30$ points: Review and update your requirements for each of the four app functions listed on slide $4.$

Deliverable $3$: Initial design and prototype

$$ In deliverable $3,$ you will now use your refined requirements from deliverable $2$ to develop a prototype of your app using any freely available prototyping software available on the internet $($for example Balsamiq or Figma$)$

$80$ points: Your prototype needs to include all four functions of the app

$$ Each function needs to be able to complete the main flow and one alternative flow $(10$ points each, total $80$ points$)$

$20$ points: You will submit a short video that shows someone $[$could be you$]$ using the prototype through all $8$ flows $($that is: $2$ flows per each of the $4$ functions$)$

$$ In deliverable $4,$ you will now conduct a usability test with $3$ individuals $(1$ each from your $3$ different user groups$)$

$$ Test sessions should be between $30-60$ minutes each

$15$ points: Study tasks $$ List and explain the study tasks that you will have each participant conduct. Explain why these tasks are important to your product development. Overview of method $$ detail how you executed the study. Include basic participant demographics in tabular form.

$35$ points: Design Changes: Explain how you translated those

findings into design changes and outline the design changes

$15$ points: Test script

Deliverable $5$: Overview

$$ In deliverable $5,$ you will now an update your design to reflect your key learnings from your usability test.

$$ You will create a high visual$-$ and high$-$interactive$-$ fidelity prototype that demonstrates your final design.

Deliverable $5$: Prototype

Upload a final, clickable prototype $($or provide a link to a web$-$based prototype$).$ Your final prototype should reflect the look and feel of your final, commercially$-$viable app.

At a minimum, a user should be able to interact with it to complete the following:
